English 원문
Every sunrise, Faye cycled to the kiln yard on the outskirt of town, yet today the air felt muggy long before the fire door came into view. Seldom had the bricks along the path held so much warmth overnight. Her gloves still warm from pedaling, she unlatched the outer hatch to gauge the ember bed; a fine crack zigzagged across the ash she expected to find smooth. She thought to confide the odd humidity to someone, but only the kiln exhaled. At the corner, a candid photograph from last season showed her laughing near the same hatch, the paper edges now curled by heat.
Beneath the sheltering roof, relics of countless firings lingered. The cooling bricks still carried flecks of blue chalk from a forgotten jest two apprentices had traced into a smiling sun; rain had washed most of it away, leaving a ghost of the grin. Nowhere along the bench could she find the iron rod she always used to stir the coals. What stopped her was a soft scrape at the gate: Joel appeared, shoulders dusted with flour from the bakery nearby, a wooden paddle balanced like an oar. Hardly had he set it down when the wind shifted, and the kiln’s viewing slit glowed brighter.
If the draft were any stronger, the glaze might cool too fast, yet the ash blocked the vent completely. Joel angled the paddle under the lid; her palms steadied the hinge. The obstruction yielded grain by grain, releasing a sudden ribbon of orange light. A leaf-shaped tile, still shining, tipped from the shelf and landed at their boots, its surface bearing a candid outline of veins picked out in darker slip. Joel raised an eyebrow; she only shrugged, pausing longer than the heat allowed. The pair worked in silence until the flow of air evened, neither daring to confide guesses about the stray piece.
The sun climbed, but the yard cooled as the kiln reached its holding phase. Joel packed his paddle for delivery rounds, embers reflected in the sheen of flour on his sleeve. Faye lifted the fallen tile; its cracked glaze caught each flicker like water. Whatever hand had shaped the leaf, it lay outside any plan sketched on her notebook, and the unanswered detail pulsed hotter than the bricks. Only when Joel waved from the gate did she tuck the fragment into her apron pocket. She placed it later on the windowsill, where evening heat met the first cool drift from the river.
