Sidelong, Ned tugged the toy horse free. The battered framework resisted; one axle had wedged into a slight fissure in the floorboard, too tight for a straight pull. He rocked the body forward, then back, yet the axle held. Were the board smoother, the wheels would glide, he thought, but splinters locked them. A hesitation stalled his grip; he had promised himself to finish the mantel clock first, but the creeping mystery under his bench pulled harder. At last he angled the horse, pressed a screwdriver under the stuck wheel, and felt the axle lift. A puff of chalk burst out, scattering pale specks across his apron. Ned steadied the toy on the worktable beside the clock, treating the cracked figure as a partner rather than scrap. A thin spring curved from its belly, rattling with each pulse of the overhead fan. He traced the spring to a hidden cam under the wooden saddle; a loose gear allowed inertia to wind backward, enough momentum to creep until friction stalled it, leaving the chalky trail. A rail near the doorway, built long ago to hold your horses during deliveries, offered a convenient corral; Ned wheeled the toy beneath it and looped a frayed cloth around the neck.
