English 원문
Every evening, exactly at seven, Ned dragged the broom across the repair-shop floor before wiping the scarred bench. Tonight, a faint chalky streak ran across the walnut plank, as if a small wheel had skidded and stalled there. He brushed a thumb over the mark; powder clung to his nail and fell in slow spirals. The lamps above hummed their usual rhythm, yet the bench felt strangely tilted, tools nudging each other in minute shivers. Rarely had the vise jaws slipped when empty; now they inched open, metal groaning like a yawn cut short. Ned set the broom aside, the routine already fractured, and leaned closer to the streak, following its hesitant curve toward the edge.
He shifted the adjustable lamp, trying to manipulate the light instead of the stain itself, and the bulb’s glare revealed a second clue: three fine dents forming a triangle beside the streak. Ned fetched a loupe, yet paused midway — the loupe was missing, replaced by a wooden joint from the anatomical model he kept for reference. The rounded knob looked like a talus, smooth and blank where the ligament grooves should lie. A slow exhale clouded the glass of a half-repaired clock, then cleared again, reflecting his own brow. Sway, stall, sway — the pendulum’s cadence no longer matched the ticking, a detail he filed away without comment. Beneath the bench, a brass horse on castors rested against a split frame, wheels flecked with chalk dust.
Sidelong, Ned tugged the toy horse free. The battered framework resisted; one axle had wedged into a slight fissure in the floorboard, too tight for a straight pull. He rocked the body forward, then back, yet the axle held. Were the board smoother, the wheels would glide, he thought, but splinters locked them. A hesitation stalled his grip; he had promised himself to finish the mantel clock first, but the creeping mystery under his bench pulled harder. At last he angled the horse, pressed a screwdriver under the stuck wheel, and felt the axle lift. A puff of chalk burst out, scattering pale specks across his apron. Only then did he notice matching streaks along the castor rims — the earlier mark had not been random; it charted the horse’s silent nightly journey across the bench.
Ned steadied the toy on the worktable beside the clock, treating the cracked figure as a partner rather than scrap. A thin spring curved from its belly, rattling with each pulse of the overhead fan. He traced the spring to a hidden cam under the wooden saddle; a loose gear allowed inertia to wind backward, enough momentum to creep until friction stalled it, leaving the chalky trail. A rail near the doorway, built long ago to hold your horses during deliveries, offered a convenient corral; Ned wheeled the toy beneath it and looped a frayed cloth around the neck. Behind him, Ned flicked the switch on the lamp, and the streak on the bench vanished into darkness.
