Every afternoon, Eve arranged the day’s broken things into neat rows, then snapped on the bench lamp; tonight the bulb glowed a shaky amber before steadying. The smell of machine oil mixed with waxy dust from split radio cases, and patina lay on everything—keys rubbed bright at their centers, handles dark where palms never touched. A squat kitchen scale waited closest to her elbow. Its pointer clung to the far end of the dial, sure of its own error, and that certainty seemed simple enough to erase.
Hardly had her screwdriver met the first screw when the tip skidded over a fine, stubborn groove. Oxidised threads refused to shift, and the platform above them rocked as though mocking her grip. All she could measure was the sluggish tilt of the pointer against tarnished brass; the crooked platform became the pressing issue, yet its cause stayed hidden. A mindset shift drifted across her posture—shoulders lowered, movements slower, the familiar rhythm undone by this small rebellion of metal and time.
The hinge uttered an exasperated squeak just as Luke stepped through the back door, flour dust clinging to his cuffs. Registered elsewhere as a nutritionist, he visited whenever kitchen tools lost their balance. His sleeve still rolled, Luke reached for a spare spring and held the scale steady while Eve angled a narrower driver beneath the lip. Were the casing milder, the old spring might have slid free; instead, a brittle flake broke loose, releasing a hush of pale petals that fluttered onto the bench. Chrysanthemum, dried to parchment, had slipped between gears long ago and clogged the mechanism.
Eve brushed the petals aside, fitted Luke’s slimmer spring in place of her own last spare, and watched the pointer return to zero without ceremony. Petal fragments settled over the empty blister in her parts drawer, faintly golden under the lamp’s cone. Outside, the street remained dark, but inside the shop the hush lingered, broken only by two spoons that tapped together inside the fixed scale’s metal bowl.
