A muffled clang travelled through the observatory dome, the metal floor answering with a low resonance that rolled beneath Greta’s boots. Outside the slit, Orion drifted, yet inside the red-lit room an eclectic array of star charts lay open across a bench, their pencil circles declaring certainty. Tonight’s predicted conjunction was meant to be a grand affair, and Greta trusted the motorised drive to keep the planet steady in the eyepiece while she noted times and angles.
What filled the dome was a harmonious blend of familiar sounds: the steady hum of the drive, the faint hiss of cold air, and, from a corner stove, the quiet toasting of a thin slice of bread resting inside a ceramic bowl. Then the hum faltered. The planet slid from view, and the charts suddenly looked premature. Greta swung the telescope back, tightened a knob, and waited; the image wandered again. Hardly had the shutter clicked into its new notch when a second, sharper clang came, as though the floor were glass and something heavy had tapped beneath it.
Her gloves tucked under one arm, Greta knelt beside the gear housing. She studied the teeth under red light, yet nothing appeared broken. She exhaled, closed her eyes, and let sight fall away. The dome ticked, the wind outside whispered, and within that hush a faint scrape repeated with every incomplete rotation. She adjusted the counterweight a fraction, listening instead of looking; the scrape softened but persisted. A pause followed—long, chilled, uncertain—before she shifted the weight again, this time toward a mark she had never used. The drive resumed, its rhythm settling into a deeper note that matched her slowed breaths. A sudden silence replaced the scrape; the eyepiece, when checked, held the drifting planet once more, though slightly dimmer than predicted.
The red lamp continued to burn after Greta stepped away. Charts remained scattered, several lines now crossed, others newly pencilled. Crumbs cooled beside the stove, the forgotten slice only part-way browned. Grease from the gearing smeared a rag on the floor, and the tiny counterweight hung at an unfamiliar notch, its metal still trembling from her last touch.
