English 원문
From the doorway of the long shed, Pia watched Owen reverse along the rope walk. His palms stayed steady while the hooks at the far frame revolved with slow, metallic groans. Hemp fragments drifted around him like pale insects; each caught the light, fluttered, then settled on the oiled floorboards. Between the ceiling beams, a lattice of spare pulleys and crossed staves formed a practical support network, rough knots darkened by years of handling. Her gaze had barely tracked the taut strands when a fresh note slipped into the usual creak. The pitch cut higher, almost curious, rising from the twisted heart of the rope itself. She stayed at the threshold, counting loops on the growing coil, trying to match the sound to something she remembered, yet the pitch kept slipping, just beyond recall.
She finally stepped inside and felt the floorboards flex under soft soles. A coil lay closer than she expected; the rope-maker had advanced faster than memory allowed. Loose fibers clung to her cuffs, and a cat lurking between the empty bobbins prepared to pounce on them as they floated past. Midway down the walk, she paused: a splintered stake had replaced the smooth maple peg that served as the navigator’s turning post. Its top lay crudely shaved flat, a chisel still resting nearby. Were the post lower, the twist would sag, yet Owen worked on, untroubled, his rhythm unchanged. Pia drew a finger along the fresh wood; the groove felt warm, as though the tool had lifted only moments earlier. The stake leaned a shade off center, bending the strand’s line almost imperceptibly.
The sound sharpened again when she reached the frame, coil completed. Hands chalked white, she bent to gather the final loop. A small carved platypus lay wedged beneath the coil’s first turn, its bill chipped, the grain darkened with oil. A faint tremor ran through the finished cable, the way a drum skin shivers after the stick lifts, and then subsided. It was the uneven placement of that creature that had first set the rope singing differently, not the machinery at all. What struck her most was the dust packed into its tiny webbed feet, proof that it had rested there through countless runs, unnoticed. Light from the clerestory panes danced over the strand, sketching shifting bands across her wrist. Owen nodded once from the distant hooks; no word passed between them. Pia lifted the platypus and set it atop the new stake. She walked toward the open yard, hemp grit pressing between her fingers while the rope, now silent, held its shape behind her.
