English 원문
Across the oak floor, a pale smear ran crooked from the doorway to the walking path. June tipped her heel again: damp marl clung to the edge of her boot. She scraped it on a rougher board and stepped backward into her lane, palms open over the manila hemp. At the far frame, Ingrid set the hand-crank in motion; the brass ratchet counted the turns, one click per careful sweep. Slanted light cut across the shed and warmed the dust in the beam, while a cool draft skimmed her shins. The first twist traveled down the loose bundle, and the fibres began to consolidate into yarn. Their rasp rose under June’s skin, a dry brush that left a faint, grassy scent.
Heat gathered where her hand met the moving strand, gentle at first, then insistent, and she slowed her feed to spare the spot. That easing slacked the note; the creak dropped, and a ripple chased the twist away from evenness. June tugged a fold of her leather apron over the contact point, trying to reassure the edge into staying flat against her palm. The layer cooled the touch, yet it also blurred her reading of tension, and a second warp teased at the line. “Twenty-one,” Ingrid said across the length, her voice steady over the slow, measured clicks. June adjusted her pace to the count, but the smear she had missed underfoot slicked one step, and the strand twitched against the hooks.
She halted mid-backward step, toe hovering above the pale thread of marl, and lifted the apron fold away. Bare skin met the hemp again, warm and direct, and the creak climbed until it steadied. Each click landed like a stitch closing air between fibres; June shifted to a cleaner strip of plank and spread the feed across a fresh patch of palm. The top began its slow slide, three strands gathering under it in careful counter-turn. “Twenty-seven,” Ingrid called from the frame, the ratchet’s tiny tooth ticking under her hand. “Hearing it,” June answered, her breath fogging briefly in the shade between light-bars near the mid-walk span. The warmth returned, manageable now, and she rotated hands in small intervals, new skin taking the work as old skin cooled.
By the time the rope met the frame for coiling, the loops lay pliant and warm, and the finished length hummed quietly in her grip. A sparrow crossed the rafters and left nothing but a momentary shadow; the ratchet’s tally rested, brass bright in the open end’s glare. June walked the sixty metres back along the same oak floor to the doorway where they had started. The smear that began the day had dried into a soft crust, chalk-crumbs feathered into the plank’s grain, cool even through her sole. She toed the edge once, a light tap that raised a tiny puff, then set her heel beyond it and watched the dust settle in the narrow seams.
