The metallic tang of damp basalt reached Hugo before the steam grazed his cheeks. He had crossed the meadow for years, trusting the pool to greet him with the same quilted warmth rippling over the travertine lip. Today, inside the soft plume, the air pressed against his skin differently—lighter, almost restless. Intermittent bubbles rolled up from the vent, and the pauses between bursts lasted longer than he remembered. A faint tremor accompanied each plume, as though the stone inhaled behind his touch. Kneeling, he laid a forearm along the rock; heat still gathered there, yet the rhythm of rising water and escaping gas seemed out of step with the sturdy calm he expected.

He walked the perimeter, fingertips sliding over corrugated crusts the water had painted in slow spirals. Nowhere along the rim could he find the pale oval stain that once marked the highest overflow line, and the discrepancy tugged at him like a loose thread. In its place, a scalloped ridge—no higher than a fingernail—caught the light. Each quantum of new mineral had lifted the border, almost invisibly, yet the pool’s echo changed: when the bubbles burst, a deeper resonance travelled through the ledge and into his knuckles. He paused, pressed harder, then drew his hand back, unsure whether the vibration came from the spring or from some urging inside bone.

Steam thinning, he sat on a lower shelf where water lapped against his boots in a gentle, reciprocal sway—warmth pushing, coolness returning. He meant only to rest, yet the stone under that shelf rose more sharply than memory allowed, nudging his balance forward. He shifted, measured the incline with a flat palm, and found another ridge hiding beneath the waterline. The ridges aligned in an elegant lattice, step after step; their pattern, once scattered, now formed a ladder of subtle terraces. For a breath he considered scooping at the deposit with a twig, then stopped, foreseeing nothing but crumbled fragments and murky clouds disturbing the clarity he valued.

He retraced his steps to the first spot where steam had pricked his cheeks. Through the thinner veil, the pool revealed itself as a slow clock, each ridge marking silent hours. The edge looked unchanged at a glance, yet the added layers bent reflections, and the waterline now copied that bend in a subtle arc. Hugo straightened, brushed damp grit from his palms, and turned toward the meadow. Behind him, the newest ridge caught a slant of afternoon light, its wet glaze bright as a fresh coin against the older, matte terraces.
