She set the single monitor in place and powered the drone. Rotor icons glowed, then the image of treetops flooded the screen. Amber glare crept across the glass, layer upon layer, so each minute another ghost-shape of her own face drifted there. The subtlety of the change fooled her at first, yet the brightness kept stacking: first a pale veil, then a milky sheet, then near-white shimmer that erased river, ridge, even shadow. Her jaw tightened; perseverance showed in the steady way her wrist held the controller, refusing to jerk the sticks. A coffee tin, painted long ago with chipped birds of subtle charm, stood untouched at her elbow, catching the same intrusive light.

Her sleeves rolled higher, she shifted sideways, but the glare pooled again. For a beat she stilled, thumb resting mid-air above the left stick. Skin remembered a motion learnt while centring pottery clay: a slow outward press, quarter turn, lift. Without thinking, her hand traced that rhythm on the drone’s brightness dial—press, twist, raise—and the screen dimmed. Only then did the landscape steady, colours returning in quiet bands of green and stone. Still, luminous flecks floated on the glass, reminders of something that ought to fill the empty tripod yet did not.

The survey line resumed until an unexpected flicker broke the pattern: a single crimson maple leaf spun through the live feed, its edges catching sunlight like stained glass. Nothing in the meadow above her moved; the leaf belonged to the forest canopy far below, drifting beneath the drone, but its red danced across the pixel sky where a companion’s cursor used to travel. The drone hovered, Nina’s finger pausing before the ‘return’ toggle; in that pause the glare eased, the meadow air cooled, and the leaf slid out of frame. She tapped the command.
