"This plank balances on one edge," Vera said. Her thumb pressed against the ragged corner, coaxing the board toward the cutting line chalked in dusky ochre. Felix had already fetched fresh sandpaper, its rough side glittering under honeyed light pooling through the tall doorway. The warm glow turned the thin varnish in its jar almost amber, and dust motes drifted through it in a dreamlike shimmer. They worked silently, tools chiming against the scarred worktable, until Felix nudged a short dowel too close to the drying shelf. The dowel rolled and tapped a glued panel that had been propped for minutes. The panel pivoted outward toward the yard door Vera had left ajar for fresh air.
The falling panel slapped the floor and skittered into the sunlit yard. A small lizard basking on the threshold sprang aside, its tail flicking like an urgent signal. Startled, a row of sparrows pecking among offcuts shot upward in a burst of rapid wings. Their sudden lift brushed a hanging cord loosely knotted to a sawhorse beside the supply corner. The cord jerked the sawhorse forward, and its leg knocked a half-full box of wooden beads onto the boards. Beads scattered across the planks, pattering in uneven waves that glittered where sunlight poured through the doorway. Beyond the fence, a marble-spotted ocelot lifted its head, curious about the rattling chain that now rolled toward the varnish jars. The cat stepped closer, paws landing on the shifting beads and driving them faster in unpredictable arcs. If those beads reached the glass, shards could spray across every unfinished piece.
Felix lunged, slid a thick offcut beneath the jar cluster, and formed a low wall that redirected the shiny tide. The beads slowed, tapped quietly against the makeshift barrier, and finally stopped beside it. The ocelot sniffed a rolling bead, lost interest, and padded back toward the rustling grass outside the yard. Only drifting husks from the sparrows’ lunch still fluttered in a slow reverie near the doorway. By evening, the studio lay silent under softer light, and nobody remained to sweep the scattered evidence. Fine sawdust covered Felix’s wooden wall, while amber streaks on the tilted panel dried into faint ripples. Hours later, a single bead shifted inside the groove, rolling two centimetres before the darkness claimed its shine.
