The stack of plates on the bar counter stood mute, but the receipt printer chirped at uneven intervals. Reed stepped into the dining area, the humid climate outside still clinging to his sleeves. A faint hiss rose from the coffee machine, followed by a short metallic ring when a spoon touched its rim. His goal was simple: pick up a to-go cup of herbal tea infused with fresh lemon balm before the next city bus reached the stop across the street. He studied the entrance clipboard; three names lay above his, each scratched through after collection. From the kitchen doorway came a low drumbeat of pans, yet his own order tag remained unseen. Two new tickets rattled onto the string, and he realized the queue was already lagging behind.
Reed drifted closer to the heat lamp, hoping the staff might notice him without needing words. A server with an assistive rubber brace around her wrist slid plates onto a tray; the utensils clattered like tiny bells. He attempted a timing shift: instead of hovering, he circled the bar counter, counting the rhythm of names being announced—one every forty seconds, then a pause, then two in quick succession. He planned to step forward during the pause, but a spluttering pan drowned the next call, and the chance passed. Another adjustment followed; he waved off the drizzle of honey he had requested earlier, thinking it might shorten preparation, yet the cook replied with a nod only Reed could hear in the scrape of spatula on steel. The infusion had been promised within fifteen minutes, yet nineteen had drifted past the wall clock.
An unexpected rustle came from the patio edge—soft hind feet tapping wood slats. A tawny rabbit hopped through the open side door, nails ticking against tile, and every nearby head turned toward the whispering movement. The server jolted; her tray tilted, bumping the ticket string. Reed’s paper tag slid forward under the heat lamp ahead of schedule. When the confusion calmed, the cup he wanted already waited, steam rumbling against its lid. He paid, the coins chiming once against the counter, and stepped toward the exit while distant laughter still fluttered around the booths. Near the swinging door hinge, a single pale hair from the rabbit clung to the varnish, vibrating each time the door swayed.
