English 원문
Striped pellet crumbs had formed neat half-circles beneath every second cage when Nora entered the display zone. She balanced on the edges of her sneakers, shifting her weight from heel to toe while counting the repeating arcs: one, gap, one, gap, across the whole lower row. A gallant cockatiel fluttered above, its chest pushing air toward her face with each wingbeat. A short squall from the parrot section shook the hanging toys, yet the curious pattern on the floor stayed perfectly intact. She knelt; the vinyl pressed against her knees, and the crumbs stuck to her palms like coarse sand. A staff member walked by, the metal flask on his belt tapping his hip at every stride, but he said nothing. Behind Nora, warmth from the small-animal lamps drew a faint haze upward, and spilled water near the bedding trays had begun to solidify into pale lumps.
Minutes passed before the queue at the interaction gate thinned enough for Nora to step onto the low platform. Only then did she notice the tall glass box marked for chinchillas sat higher than her line of sight. She bent her legs and dragged a light display crate closer; its extra twenty centimeters lifted her torso but left her chin level with the wooden rim. She added a generous sack of seed as a second layer, rising another fifteen centimeters. Still not enough. After a pause, she tucked a folded handling glove beneath her shoes, steadied her calves, and the combined height finally cleared the barrier in one sudden stretch. Her fingertips curled over the rim, and the box rocked forward. The half-circles were no random spill; each sleeping chinchilla had pushed its round food cup outward, turning it like a slow wheel and shaving crumbs in that precise shape. Nora loosened her grip, deciding to give the dozing animals space. She slid the closest cup back under the bars, leaving a fresh crescent of crumbs on the foam mat.
