English 원문
The shallow oval pressed into the granite counter showed where the metal scoop ordinarily waited. Olive set both palms on the cool stone and leaned forward, yet her fingers met only dust where the handle had been earlier that week. She had planned to fill a paper cup with fresh bedding before her turn in the small-animal interaction zone, thinking a familiar scent could calm the sleeping hamster. Instead, the scoop lay unseen, probably soaking behind the swinging doors, and the handler guided another visitor to the low enclosure while the five-minute timer was already running.
Needing to keep her muscles loose, Olive pivoted toward the aquarium aisle, rolling each foot so her weight moved smoothly from heel to toe. A terrarium sat on the lower shelf; humidity gathered on its glass while a tiny water feature shaped like an urn let a thread of water glide down its ribs. Higher up, a dove fluttered once inside a stacked cage, then balanced, eyeing Olive’s steady posture. The previous session ended, people shifted, and the queue advanced. Olive exhaled, found the scoop now resting in a tub for drying, and finally stepped toward the freed enclosure.
Her calves tightened as she crouched beside the clear box. Wood shavings formed silent dunes; the hamster had tunneled deep. Olive lowered the cup of bedding, tapping a slow rhythm against the rim, yet nothing broke the surface. She adjusted, drawing back her arm and remaining motionless. Bird calls faded, air pumps hummed, and then the bedding swelled; sawdust lifted and a golden face surfaced, finishing with a sleepy waddle toward her knuckles. Shavings still drifted in the warm lamp light while the timer’s bulb resumed its gentle blink, and Olive was holding her breath as her fingers hovered a finger-width from the tiny whiskers.
