English 원문
A faint beep escaped the ticket machine, then a strip of silver paper slid forward and brushed the floor tiles. Cora stooped for it while Grant pushed through the blue-grey queue guides that zigzagged like an indoor obstacle course. Fluorescent tubes washed both of their jackets with chalky light, and the single pen chained to the form-filling desk waited between them. Barnacle-shaped clots of old tape dotted the laminate surface, and a tiny sticker showing a kangaroo mid-hop clung to one corner. The digital display had already flashed Cora’s number, yet the international customs sheet still lay blank.
Grant spread an address label beside her; its border showed pale silhouettes of migratory birds arcing north. He angled the clipboard left, but the pen’s chain pulled tight and creaked. The wrench-like sound drew both sets of eyes. The pen had been tugged so often that one steel link had thinned; it twisted, turned white along its bend, and snapped. Metal kissed the counter in two short taps, and the pen darted toward the floor. Cora’s palm reached first, Grant’s fingers closed a breath later, and the pen hovered between them without striking the tiles. Around their hands, the residue flakes stirred but did not fall.
Cora balanced the customs sheet across her knee, Grant steadied the label against the cool desk edge, and they wrote in alternating bursts, passing the freed pen back and forth like runners handing a baton. By the time the clerk called the next number, both forms contained neat blocks of ink and the broken chain lay curled in a loose spiral. A wire cart stacked with empty trays rolled past, its wheels clicking once as it collected the dangling fragments from the floor.
