English 원문
“The pen chain is stuck,” Gareth murmured. Cleo tugged the cold links; they rattled but refused to stretch far enough to reach the bottom row of the insurance form. A clipboard waited on the form-filling table, its spring clip so tight that her thumb tingled when she had pressed it once already. One surface of the clip had been polished smooth by hundreds of hands, yet the steel teeth still cut into the paper’s edge and held it too high. If the clip had been softer, it would have opened with ease. Around her elbows, tiny curled ticket stubs clustered like brittle leaves—entropy spreading quietly along the tabletop.
A gust slid through the automatic door as a sparrow darted inside, wings brushing the fluorescent glow. The sudden draft lifted Cleo’s half-loose pages; they fluttered, slapped her cheek, and slipped free. Sheets skidded across linoleum; their shuffle sounded like coins on glass. The bird wheeled once above the reception desk, then perched on a ceiling vent while the papers landed in a loose reconciliation across the vinyl seats. Cleo crouched, gathering corners. In her pocket, a palm-sized spiral fossil—found during last month’s walk along the town wharf—pressed against her leg, reminding her of weight and patience. She tried prying the clip again, failed, and felt the metal bite a second time.
While Gareth steadied the swaying forms, Cleo noticed the very stiffness that had hurt her. She folded the top margin of each sheet, slid the thicker edge beneath the relentless clip, and let the clamp’s fierce grip pin every layer flat. Now the short pen chain easily met each blank line because the paper, not the pen, moved. Ink glided across the boxes until only the signature remained. The bird slipped back through the door, and the room settled. One working pen rested among two dry sticks in the plastic cup.
