English 원문
"Who balanced this flat rock here?" Zane tapped the slate-colored slab with his muddy boot, and it teetered over the puddle. The question hung while he placed a foot on top, testing a route over the moss-slick trunk. In response, the slab wobbled, slid sideways, and finally plopped into brown water. Its edge struck a fallen twig that sprang upward and flicked Vera’s small metal lantern from the log top. The lantern began to oscillate on its hooked handle, tracing bright arcs before bumping against a tufted pansy growing beside the trail. Petals scattered onto the wet leaf litter, and both friends stepped back, shoes sinking as the mud gulped at their soles. The improvised stepping stone clearly could not bear a full stride yet.
Vera wiped rain from her brow and walked toward the branch debris zone, leaving the unstable stone where it lay. She sifted through sticks, pulling one thick pole free; its straight grain looked like the quintessence of trail staffs. Beside her, Zane crouched under the canopy gap, arranging three shorter limbs into a rough frame. He aimed to slide backpacks across the frame before any climbing began. A low branch above them had been cracked earlier by another walker. Zane tugged it down to clear space, showering pale bark flakes onto his jacket. Next, they inspected the upturned root plate, where earthworms wriggled in glistening tunnels. They packed several fist-sized clumps of firmer soil into a cloth pouch, hoping the extra weight would steady the frame. If the branch snapped again, water would splash higher, so they kept their gear beyond the puddle’s rim.
They carefully fitted the pole between two rough knots on the trunk. A fortuitous shove from a growing rivulet nudged the flat rock into view. The slab drifted against the log and jammed beneath a ridge of bark, halting further movement. Neither friend had planned a second attempt, yet the new angle offered a firmer platform. Zane placed the lantern on the slick moss beside the ridge. He stepped onto the stone with one sure motion, the earlier wobble gone from his hips. The pole braced his balance, Vera passed the packs, and soon both stood in the far side clearing, shoes only lightly splashed. Behind them, the lantern’s beam bobbed gently as drops from the canopy continued to patter. Rainwater kept sliding along the moss and dripping into the widening puddle.
