English 원문
A faint gurgle slipped under the break-room door, so Erik nudged it open with a shoulder. Steam drifted above the coffee machine, although no one stood nearby, and a cooled ring on the table marked where an earlier cup had sat. He planted both palms on the counter, feeling laminate press against his wrists, then slid his mug—an old one that showed a faded sketch of a grocery cart—to the center of the tray. The filter basket had been left half open by the previous user; its metal hinge rocked, then returned. Erik closed it, pressed the single button, and waited. Inside, the green indicator began to oscillate, stopping and starting like a tiny metronome. Water rose, but only in short spurts, refusing to coalesce into a steady stream. Liquid tapped the mug twice, then the pump paused, and silence filled the narrow space.
He shifted weight from his left foot to his right and counted the seconds, letting his breathing match the slow pulsate of the standby light. If the blinking settled into a solid glow, he would trigger the cycle again. Thirty heartbeats later the machine quieted completely. Erik leaned in, elbows bent, and touched the button just as the final droplet fell. This time the pump caught; water coursed downward, warming his knuckles through the porcelain. Midway through the pour, a hairline fracture near the mug’s base widened. Coffee slipped through, gathering under the cup until the puddle began to drift toward the edge of the counter. He grabbed a stack of napkins, pressed them against the leak, and felt the paper grow heavy in his fist. By the time he lifted the cracked mug away, a dark stripe of liquid stretched under the humming refrigerator.
At the same moment, two rooms down the corridor, Sara watched the printer tray tremble against an overfilled stack of reports, the pages lifting and falling like shallow breaths.
