Warm plastic pressed against York’s palms as he lifted the coffee-machine reservoir, its sides flexing with a faint strain. He balanced the lukewarm container under the break-room tap, watched water swirl inside, and slid it back until the hatch clicked shut. One scoop of grounds went into the filter basket, then he nodded toward Forrest—his mentor—who read documents at the nearby desk. The air carried a jovial chime when the start button lit green, and the pump began to hum.

The first dark trickle smelled rich, so York shook in a second scoop for extra flavour. Steam drifted upward in nine soft puffs; the tallest hung right on cloud nine before thinning near the ceiling. Wanting an even stronger cup, he tipped a third scoop over the heap, and the filter cone sagged. Water backed up, overflowed the rim, sheeted across the metal plate, and spilled onto the tiled floor. The shallow slope guided the stream through the doorway, where it dripped into the corridor carpet. Each drop left a darker oval that spread like ink around an unplugged cartographer’s map tube resting against the skirting.

York crouched, felt his calves tighten, and pinched the middle scoop of grounds out of the basket in one clean grab. The sudden space let the trapped liquid sink; the pump’s pitch lowered, and flow returned to a steady thread. He folded a paper napkin and jammed it under the machine’s front lip, redirecting the remaining trickle into the drain tray. A thin rivulet slipped past his shoe, carrying a bent silver paper clip that twirled in small loops toward the gap beneath the fridge.
