A row of damp footprints had dried halfway across the linoleum when Rosa stepped into the touch pool room. Her thighs braked against the tall rim of the shallow trough; their scheduled climb to the observation tower lay on hold, the gate had been locked by the staff after a gust shivered the platform rails. She rolled her shoulders, trying to keep warmth in them, and studied the water matrix flowing under the pump’s clear lid. Waiting felt longer with her backpack tugging downward, so she nudged the brass handle once, meaning only to feel its weight. The piston dropped, and a cool column shot forward, drumming across smooth pebbles. The ripple whispered along the surface, lifted tiny droplets over the lip, and began spilling onto the floor. Rosa shifted her stance, realising the spill crept toward a mobile display cabinet lined with feather samples.

The first splash reached the cabinet’s left wheel, loosening a ring of dry grit. Gravity took the invitation; the cabinet rolled two finger-widths and thumped a corner of the corridor rope stanchion. That small jolt transmitted farther than Rosa expected: the velvet rope swayed, tipped a nearby poster tube, and the plastic cylinder whirled across the slick patch like a tiny canoe. A volunteer in a green apron arrived, knees bending to keep balance on the spreading film. Without mention of blame, she slid a rubber wedge beneath the cabinet’s front caster; the motion stopped in a clean instant. Next, her palm lifted the pump handle into its upright position, ending the flow as quietly as it had begun. A laminated sheet marked spill protocol hung near the sink, and the volunteer pointed toward it with casual humility, then fetched a stack of towels. As Rosa stepped backward, the last thread of water travelled around the wedge and slipped toward the floor drain, curving in a slow arc across the glare of the ceiling lights.
