The paper’s cool tooth grazed Suki’s wrist as she guided a loaded brush across the wet lower half. A yeasty whiff rose from the rinse cup where blues and ochres mingled into murky violet. High on the clothesline, a swallow flicked its tail, the tiny bird catching air that carried resin from an improvised timber prop beneath her board. She aimed to flood a final stripe of sky before the drying tide sealed the upper edge, yet the wooden block, thick and rugged like a wall from a rustic dollhouse, slumped forward, its weight forcing the board flat. She gripped the block, sap-scented moisture clinging to her fingers, and tried to slide it aside. The swollen wood clung to the damp board, and precious seconds slipped away with the rising warmth.

Sunlight pooled on the porch roof, heating the paper so quickly that sharp steam from evaporating pigment pinched Suki’s nostrils. The drying line now marched across the planned horizon, leaving a pale edge where deeper colour had been expected. The timber prop sat awkwardly near the centre, crowding her reach. She hooked two fingers under the block again; the coarse grain scraped her skin but still gripped the moist board. A breeze nudged the edge of the fresco study taped beside her, carrying a lime-sharp aroma that promised even faster drying. In that swirl of smells she noticed something: the block’s broad base remained bone-dry, untouched by any splash. Its stubborn weight, once a nuisance, could steady the board. Instead of prising it free, she shoved the timber to the upper edge, tilting the board steeply. Pigment sluiced downward, re-wetting the horizon in a smooth wave, and the heavy block anchored the new angle. A ruby bead of wash travelled too far, aiming for the blank swallow silhouette; before that could happen, a drop from the cup rolled along the board’s back, cooled the surface, and thickened the bead into stillness. She exhaled at the subtle gradient stretching across the page. Resin-laced air drifted from the timber wedge toward the damp paper.
