English 원문
Loose snow hissed off a freshly packed sphere as Joy rolled it across the stone board. Each turn sent a sharp squeal skimming between the fence and the laneway. Building such lanterns had become a quiet tradition along that narrow route, yet the first steps always sounded new. Joy had already pressed five full rows before the first problem arose. One snowball had been flattened by too much squeezing, leaving a frozen ridge that rasped when she tried to seat it. If the ridge stayed, the next layer would tilt and crack, so she flipped the ball back onto the board. Her palms drummed a slow rhythm, shaving ice while muffled grains pattered onto stone. Stacked again, the row met the others with a snug thrum, though faint openings still whistled where edges failed to touch.
As the dome grew, the hollow inside remained no wider than a squirrel’s burrow, and Joy paused beside the water tap. A thin thread of water splattered into her cupped glove, the splash echoing inside the shell like a distant drum. She sprinkled the droplets along the inner wall; steamless sizzle whispered, carving away crystals grain by grain. The task felt like a cognitive puzzle built from chill and sound rather than paper and ink. When a gust rolled from the laneway, loose powder blew through the front arch and muted the dripping beat. Joy considered stopping, then nudged two finger-sized holes into the upper row, letting the breeze escape with a gentle hiss. Those gaps, once only stubborn cracks, now became chimneys that cleared the powder and promised brighter glow. Paul’s boots crunched over the porch; the glass jar clinked as he lowered it to her waiting hands. She carried the finished lantern to the step, and pale light sifted through the tiny vents onto the untouched snow.
