Plip…plip…plip—the faucet kept a slow rhythm over the sink, each drop tapping the jug below. Flora lined three tall glasses on the towel-covered table, liquid rippling after every soft set-down. Red, yellow, and blue dye swirled in tidy rings until she stirred them with wooden skewers, streaks humming against the glass. Her goal was simple: watch coloured water climb through fresh celery stalks and mark the progress in her notebook. The first centimetre of red water had already climbed before she touched the stalks. A grey cat crouched nearby, ears twitching at every tiny clink. Flora judged the red glass too pale, so another spoonful of dye splashed in, richer and almost the shade of juniper berries after rain—her first adjustment.
Still hearing the faucet’s echo, Flora shifted the blue glass to the windowsill where warmth thrummed through the panes. The water sloshed; the stalk gave a faint hiss as air escaped. Some air had been trapped inside the blue channels during cutting, and it bubbled out in short, squeaky bursts. The cat padded closer, claws ticking on the vinyl floor. To compare, Flora fetched a spare yarrow stem from the prep board. Its fibrous end scratched the board as she slid it beside the celery—now four stems jammed at odd angles in a haphazard crowd. Liquid levels rose unevenly; tiny waves clapped against the rims whenever the cat’s tail flicked the towel. Nearby, plentiful dye bottles rattled on the shelf; the weight pushed the blue glass outward, and a glug marked dye sliding over the rim.
Blue drops drummed onto the towel, creeping toward her notebook. If the glass tipped, blue streaks would blot every page. Flora slid the book aside as the cat’s paws shuffled, sending new quivers through the table. The thick yarrow stem was crowding the jar. She pinched the stem, lifted it free, and set it on the cutting board. The cat sniffed the dripping stalk, then stepped down, vibration fading with its retreat. Freed from the extra press, the celery straightened; the glass rocked once, then stilled, and the drizzle stopped. Later, when Flora placed the jug on the supply shelf near a tonic kept for the greenhouse, a pale blue ring remained on the towel below the glass.
