English 원문
Two flattened river pebbles, a dented steel flask, and a pale half-moon mark lay between the larger stones near the waterline. Wind pressed against Kent’s jacket as he crouched; the packed stones shifted under his knees, and a shaggy sheepdog padded close enough for its shoulder to brush his leg. A smaller pup—its energetic offspring—scrambled after a drifting leaf, paws spraying tiny pebbles across the damp trace. Kent ran a thumb along the curved impression, rough at one edge, and wondered which creature had stepped there. No clear purpose guided him yet; his fingers simply searched for a stone whose weight fitted his palm.
He carried a pancake-flat slab from the base-stone selection area to an open spot facing the breeze. The first layer landed square and steady. A second, thinner disc followed, its surface smooth but grainy enough to grip. Wanting height, he added a third piece that looked like kin to the base—broad, dark, slightly heavier. As his wrist straightened, the stack wobbled; the third stone rocked on a stubborn nub hidden underneath. Kent fetched a fourth piece from the dry pile, hoping mass would calm the motion. The extra weight pressed unevenly; with a dull scrape, every layer leaned and spilled into a clattering tumble that made the sheepdog pup jump sideways.
Kent inhaled, elbows tingling from the jolt. Instead of reaching for more weight, he lifted the troublesome middle stone away. The remaining two settled immediately, their contact patch now flush. He had already pressed the lighter fourth layer into place when Sara appeared, her boots crunching. She tapped the bottom of the flask onto a wet patch beside the half-moon mark; an identical curve printed itself in the sheen, revealing the trace’s true maker. Kent chuckled, shoulders loosening, and turned back to feel the tower’s balance through his fingertips.
At the same hour, three towers farther along the bank, an older couple adjusted their own stack; the woman tapped the final stone into balance.
