“That ping sounds odd, doesn’t it?” Hazel lowered the dowel after striking a cup patterned with a pale lily. An earthy scent rose from the fired clay, mixed with a metallic tang at the unglazed rim. She tapped again; the note wavered between ring and thud, lost beneath the ceiling fan that spun dust to clear the air. Dawn, sorting colour tiles nearby, glanced over but stayed silent. Hazel tried the rubber mallet; the heavier head gave a dull tone. Uncertain whether a hairline crack hid in the cup or the base’s thickness fooled her ear, she set the piece at the edge of the felt pad, beside straw from the reject bin, and walked toward the wrapping station.
Across the workshop, cooler air drifted through a high window whose frame looked onto an overpass; faint exhaust carried a sour, tarry odor that clung to the wood shelves. Hazel moved to the wrapping station. Tissue paper stored under the table left a chalk-dry taste in her mouth as she folded it around a flawless bowl. Each plate had been numbered in charcoal before firing, and the glaze colours—amber, olive, pale blue—now gave off different, slightly sweet kiln scents. When a roll of bubble wrap slipped, she caught it, then crossed to the wash basin. The sponge soaked up dusty water that smelled of wet stone; squeezing it sent a muddy stream toward the drain. A single drop splashed onto the felt pad beneath spare plates; the moisture acted as an unintended catalyst, loosening fine glaze powder and releasing a sharp mineral whiff.
Hazel rinsed her hands as the kiln began to wind down. The damp towel brushed the felt pad, spreading a droplet. Water slid along a slope, nudged the lily cup, and the cup tapped a plate. The plate wobbled once, then stilled; the slide exposed the pad’s hidden tilt. Hazel pressed the towel on the wet strip, soaking up the flow. She lifted the cup, held it lighter than before, and tapped with the dowel; a ping floated through air. She placed the cup among the keepers and walked away.
Hours later, kiln heat had faded. Glaze scents hung over bowls, and a shadow stretched from the cooling rack across the felt pad, stopping just short of the lily cup.
