She placed it on the felt pad, careful not to disturb an amber cup beside it that smelled like burnt sugar. She had already compared two plates earlier, and their steady pings still echoed behind the kiln’s distant hum.

To overcome the ceiling fan’s low whirr, she cupped her ear and launched a delicate tap with the wooden dowel. The note rang almost clear, yet vibration leaked through the pad because the cup and bowl touched along one edge. That contact wrapped both tones in a dusty blanket of dullness, masking their differences inside the mineral-scented air. A sharper strike might jumpstart a brighter ring, yet the wooden dowel felt too heavy for such risk. Greer slid the cup sideways, but its glazed foot skated on powdered clay and gathered slow momentum toward the table’s corner. She caught it just in time, yet the brief glide cooled the rim, and the next tap produced a puzzled half-ping.
