English 원문
Two tall glasses had left pale rings on the porch step earlier in the evening. Iris, still sticky from the sweet drink, lifted the rinsed jar toward a pulse of green beside the flower-bed. Pierce knelt beside her, and his knee sank into mulch that gripped his skin like tiny hooks. A hungry cricket rasped near the jasmine bush, its sound rising as if sandpaper dragged across wood. The jar’s metal lid, already loosened, felt cool against her thumb despite the warm dusk air. One firefly dipped low, and Pierce cupped air around it until the insect floated through the wide opening. Its glow alone, however, faded once inside, leaving the interior dimmer than the effervescent lemonade that had filled the jar earlier. They needed more light before the insects could be admired under the hanging porch lamp.
They stepped onto the open lawn centre where fireflies gathered above the grass like tiny lanterns. Before moving the jar, Pierce paused for a quiet appreciation of the gap between his hand and the nearest spark. A second insect fluttered near Iris’s shoulder, and she moved the jar gently until the creature drifted inside. Two sparks floated above a folded napkin laid at the bottom, yet the glass still looked nearly dark. Pierce carefully twisted the lid to keep the insects safely inside the clear glass vessel. The loosened ring slipped, bumped the jar’s side, and rolled onto a nearby flat stone. The metal ring struck a terracotta saucer that sat near a pot of herbs. The saucer slid forward and nudged a marble left from last week’s game onto gravel. The marble travelled across three stepping-stones before lightly tapping the coiled garden hose near Pierce's foot. Water shivered inside the hose, and its nozzle jerked, spraying a ribbon of cold droplets across their shins. The sudden shower cooled them, a small blessing against the warm dusk, but it also startled nearby fireflies into higher branches.
Iris pressed her heel onto the rubber coil, halting the spray, and the hose sagged while the water stream thinned to silence. In that pause, one lower branch flickered again near the flower-bed edge toward the porch. Pierce raised the open jar, and Iris guided the branch downward until the third firefly slipped through the mouth. Three lights now hovered together, and the glass brightened in a single burst clear enough to outline their knuckles. The lid, already found on the grass, was tightened with careful turns, and its perforations glimmered while the insects circled. They walked back to the porch step beside the empty glasses, and damp footprints remained. The stone that had been warmed earlier now felt faintly damp from stray droplets tonight. Inside the glass that had been empty earlier, three pale sparks drifted slowly between jar wall and floral napkin.
