English 원문
Joy’s sleeve already brushed the cool glass jar when Gareth reached the desk; damp fingerprints dotted the rim in three tidy rows, like beads arranged by an unseen ruler. A sudden song burst out outside the open window, one note leaping an octave above the garden chatter, and the quick vibration carried a resin-sharp scent from the wooden dining set standing below. Vaughn, seated nearby and leafing through a plant-care guide, turned a page; the motion stirred air rich with the sweet breath of a blooming azalea that sat on the sill. Loamy soil, charcoal dust, and an aromatic hint of crushed fern swirled together, filling Gareth’s nose while he watched the repeated dots: neat, perfect, and mysterious beneath the gathering condensation.
When the fog on the glass thickened, visibility vanished. Gareth waited, then wiped the inside with a narrow cloth held by tweezers; the smear cleared only a circle, and moisture returned immediately. He switched tactics, lifting the misting bottle to the tray instead of the jar, hoping evaporation inside would slow. As the haze thinned, the dotted rows shifted; a tiny brown snail had been pacing the wall, its track forming the pattern. The creature edged toward a pebble and nudged it; the stone rolled, pressing a fern frond flat against the soil. Gareth pinched the pebble with the tweezers, guided it to a safer hollow beside the gravel, and nudged the snail onto a moss patch where the humidity stayed even. The charcoal layer had been lightly disturbed, yet the drainage boundary remained intact. He eased the glass lid into place, and a damp, mossy aroma hung between them.
