English 원문
A dust-free rectangle on the oak floor marked the spot where the woven mat usually slowed the cat. Iris crouched, checked beneath the window seat, and found the mat folded against the wall beside her shoes. The floorboards beneath the absent mat had been swept clean, a faint scent of soap floating in the warm air. With the floor now bare, she placed a clear glass of water on the sunlit sill to cast colours. Outside, a tall cypress glowed amber where midday light slipped past the eaves and streamed through the pane. The spectrum touched the wood, yet each band blurred; the sun had not reached its meridian, leaving angles shallow. She rotated the glass a finger’s width, shoulders level, but red still mixed with orange like an antelope’s running flank.
Ten quiet minutes later, the beam brightened, and violet sharpened; at once the rainbow crawled off the intended square. She slid her notebook across the floor, but the colour strip kept drifting, pushed by the earth’s slow turn. Iris lowered her elbow, bringing her eyes level with the glass rim, and nudged the cylinder one measured centimetre northward. The bands regained focus, yet a grey cloud rolled over the sun, wiping them away and cooling the warm sill. During that brief dimness, the housecat stretched, flicked its tail, and tapped the glass, tilting it just enough to spill. Water trickled across the paint, forming a thin puddle that spread under golden light when the cloud drifted aside again. Steam rose in tiny threads where the puddle started to evaporate, and new curved lines danced inside the bright splash.
Those lines, thinner than pencil strokes, spread across the notebook margin, glimmering copper beside the earlier bands Iris had traced. She noticed bubbles clinging to the inner glass wall; each one threw a separate speck of colour onto the damp wood. Outside, sunlight flashed between moving leaves, and the cypress shadow crawled slowly right, a quiet reminder that angles kept changing. If the glass remained steady, the puddle’s shrinking mirror would soon narrow the caustic pattern, hiding half the spectrum. Iris shifted her weight and pressed both palms firmly on the sun-warm floorboards for balance. She was reaching to slide the notebook beneath the rainbow’s widening edge when another rust-coloured shadow skimmed the glass.
