The plank had been measured earlier, yet another gust widened the branch angle, so its nose now reached only partway. Olive murmured a short laugh, lifted the tape again, and the metal strip rang softly against the grain. Her small terrier companion whined under the platform, the sound rising through the board gaps as steady as a kettle beginning to boil.

A sudden clang from the toolbox lid cut the rhythm. The dog’s paw had nudged it, and the metallic clap echoed off the trunk. Olive returned, wiped sweat from her forehead, and noticed the rope shining like wet glass. She wrapped a rag around the line, leaned her weight back, and looped the freed end twice around a thicker knob of bark to halt the spin. Jonas steadied the plank, and together they eased it onto the supports, accepting the shorter reach and planning to add a spacer board later.
