Heath had propped his sketchbook against the cold glass soon after boarding, the spine digging gently into his palm. A silvery film of frost clung to the pane, and the dawn threw pale stripes over the empty aisle. He wanted to catch the fragile sparkle before heating pipes erased it, so his wrist worked in quick arcs. Each jolt of the rails nudged his elbow, blurring lines and forcing him to adjust his balance against the seat. The satchel resting beside his shoes added extra weight to one side, tilting his torso slightly toward the window. Still, the graphite tip scratched across the paper in steady bursts, like cold rain tapping loose metal sheets.
A sudden harsh beep from the overhead display cut through the low engine hum, freezing Heath’s hand mid-stroke. Letters flipped above, announcing the early service departed from platform five instead of three today. Heath jammed pencils into their tin, slid the sketchbook inside the satchel, and sprang toward the door before it closed. On the footbridge, his calves tightened as he hurried up the metal steps, the strap dragging across his shoulder. Cold air funneled through gaps in the glass panels, making his cheeks tingle while he zig-zagged around slower passengers. He slid onto a seat in the new carriage; barely two minutes had vanished since. Yet the glass now showed another story, the frost reduced to clear beads that crawled downward.
Heath reopened the sketchbook, the earlier grey outlines still rough but waiting beneath the half-dried moisture stain. Without the silvery frost as guide, he bent closer, angling his forearm to shade the paper from direct light. The dawn landscape beyond the glass rolled past faster now, so he captured broad roof shapes, letting earlier dots suggest glimmer. A sudden sway when the carriage braked knocked an elbow from a passing commuter against his hand, dragging the soft graphite sideways. Instead of erasing the dark streak, he tilted the page, turning the smear into a river beside the roofs. Grey flecks dotted his fingertips, and a jagged graphite line marked the margin where the train had jerked.
