English 원문
Seth slid the crumb tray from the warm toaster, rough metal scratching against his palm as crumbs gathered like dry sand below a granite cliff. He aimed to spread jam on two slices before the microwave clock reached seven-forty, yet the main challenge already gleamed beside him: three jam jars pressed shoulder to shoulder. The middle lid had glued itself tight with dried fruit; one courageous twist shifted the cluster, and the cereal box behind them tilted. Flakes skidded over the smooth counter, struck an empty cup, and nudged the napkin holder. Seth steadied the wobbling pile, but a shrill doorbell rang.
He stepped into the hall, shoes tapping the cool tiles. A courier handed him a thin envelope that required a signature; the pause felt as long as crossing an open pavilion in summer heat. When Seth returned, steam had thinned from the kettle, and the wet ring left by the lifted milk jug had spread into a slippery oval. During his absence, the leaning cereal box had edged forward, pushing a spoon jar so that one handle now blocked the kettle’s cord.
Time pressed on, so Seth adjusted his order of moves. He waited for the next kettle click before sliding the milk jug across the damp spot, letting gravity overcome the spoon’s light resistance. With space cleared, he braced the sticky jar against the toaster’s warm flank; heat softened the sugary seal just enough for the lid to loosen under steady fingers. He chose not to wipe every crumb—if he wiped now, the toast would cool—so he spread the jam quickly and stacked the slices between two plates for the road. The microwave beeped its final warning while he pulled a napkin free. A faint crimson smear, left by his thumb on the plate’s rim, shone against the white glaze and promised a sweet fragrance to anyone who lifted it later.
