English 원문
The third hook above the stove showed only a dusty silhouette where the long wooden spoon usually rested. Rafferty stretched upward, fingers closing on empty air, then stepped back toward the prep counter. He scanned the familiar kitchen while his grandmother read slow lines from a hand-written notebook on the stand. A wooden casket on the prep counter stood already open, its hinges dark with age. Inside, on a slanted cloth, lay the missing spoon, freshly washed and still dripping slowly. He lifted it, the shaft warm from hot water, and stirred the ruby mixture. After five slow turns he carefully scooped a drop onto the waiting white china saucer. Thirty seconds later the jam slid across the glaze like thick paint: still too thin. The first try had offered bright colour, yet provided no real hold at all today.
Rafferty moved to the window ledge for another plate, knees brushing the low stool, calves tightening as he balanced the saucer. A brief squall slipped through the cracked pane, rattling the recipe stand and cooling the sweat on his neck. His grandmother twisted the gas dial lower; the bubbles gently eased but the simmer continued. Grandmother glanced at the bubbling surface and smiled, ‘Nearly there,’ before turning back to her notebook. He waited for the foam to settle and scraped sugar crystals from the spoon handle with his thumb. Intuition guided the pause; the thermometer still lagged two degrees below the textbook point, yet the surface shimmer had begun to dull. He stirred again, wrist muscles circling in an even embrace around the spoon, then placed a second drop on fresh china. This time a faint skin wrinkled when he nudged it, but the fold smoothed out, mocking the effort.
A minute later steam thinned, and the quiet clink of glass jars sliding closer promised contentment for winter breakfasts. Rafferty had already filled three sturdy jars, yet the kettle kept bubbling beside the burner. He took one more plate from the stack and, with slower strokes, aerated the deepening ruby mass. Shoulders flexed, forearms aching, he drew out a final sample from the shimmering red surface. Thirty breaths passed before the surface puckered, held firm, and then broke with a crisp snap—threshold reached. As he set the spoon down, his palm brushed the copper handle lightly at first. Warmth pulsed up his wrist, a steady heat that had always climbed there unnoticed softly. He nodded toward the orderly row of jars and stepped aside for them to cool. On the sill, a sparrow pecked at a stray sugar grain, tipped its head, and darted into the breeze.
