The spoon chime stayed perfectly still, but the tin-can lid beside it twitched with every light gust. Golden afternoon light painted the rough bark, and Kira stood under the warm shade while Suki, a striped cat, watched from the blanket near the supply box. Her plan was to add one clear note before the breeze became stronger. A brass key, its edges worn smooth, had been forged long ago for a dresser that no longer existed. She hoped it would sing. At the quiet-comparison spot the key matched the spoon so closely that their pitches blurred. With thoughtfulness she shifted knots and widened the gap, yet the confusion of tones lingered and the cat’s ears flicked in puzzled silence.
She adopted a daring second idea: place a softer tone between the two metals. From the box she chose the dented lid of a camping kettle, light enough to swing but dull enough to soften the pair. While she crossed the grass, a distant dog bellowed once from the street, and Suki’s tail curled tight. Kira looped fresh string, but a new problem appeared. The kettle lid was heavier than expected and pulled the branch downward; three nearby chimes now missed one another and only trembled without sound. An adult watering the marigolds noticed the dip and passed her a short bamboo stick already trimmed smooth at the ends.
Kira slipped the stick between two small twigs as a spacer. The branch steadied, yet the strings still crowded, so she nudged the stick sideways until the warm bark gripped it. The key and kettle lid swung apart, caught separate breezes, and finally released distinct tones into the amber air. If the wind grew stronger later, the little orchestra would change again, but for now she stepped back to the listening position. Suki rolled onto her side, paws brushing clover heads that released a sweet smell. Overhead, the mixed chimes kept turning in the mild air while the sprinkler ticked through another unhurried circle.
