Eamon’s boots sank into the dark, damp soil, and a faint silver splash of dew jumped away. Morning light slid across the stone, painting its wet patches a shifting blue-grey that mirrored the steel sky. Their goal was simple: tip the stone aside so Rosa could widen the planting hole Sable had started nearby. They set a flat slab beneath the branch, yet the improvised fulcrum flipped out, spraying loose earth across their boots. The branch crashed back, creaking like a tired gate, while the stone rolled half a finger’s width and then stopped. Beyond the wire fence a frost-white meadow stretched, its stillness making their valiant effort feel oddly small. Sable, humming beside the lilies, tipped a watering can, and silver drops scattered over blue leaves like quiet beads.

Rosa crossed the path to fetch the thinner plank that lay against the fence, its chrome nails already rusting. Together they wedged it closer to the stone, but the plank bent, sighed, and cracked along a pale grain line. As the lever sprang loose, Eamon stumbled back adrift in thought, his gaze fixed on a darker smear beneath the stone. Water shimmered there, clear enough to reveal a single tadpole wriggling like a tiny comma against the silver mud. If they had pried the stone out completely, the pocket would have drained and left the creature marooned on cold soil. Rosa’s shoulders rolled as an idea formed; rather than remove the stone, they could tilt it just enough to catch light. They slid a sturdier rock farther from the stone’s rim, waited, then pressed the branch down in quiet rhythm together.

The stone rolled onto the fresh fulcrum with a low grinding note, opening a crescent gap that filled slowly from the bucket. A fledgling sparrow fluttered down, balanced on the angled edge, and dipped its beak where the tadpole traced silver circles. Sable laughed softly at the sight, then returned to measuring the bed, letting the children shape their new plan alone. They decided to line the small pool with two smooth pebbles uncovered during the digging, one darker, one nearly frost-white. Rosa rinsed the paler pebble until it shone, while Eamon brushed soil from the darker stone with the corner of his sleeve. She set her gleaming pebble on the left rim; he laid his on the right, and twin reflections flickered beneath their hands.

石頭在新的支點上發出低沉摩擦聲，緩緩翻開，新月形的縫隙以水桶裡的水填滿。一隻雛麻雀輕拍翅膀降落，站在斜緣上啄飲，蝌蚪在水中畫出銀圈。沙貝勒欣賞片刻後回去量床，使孩子們自行完成新計畫。他們決定用挖出的兩顆光滑卵石圍邊，一深一淺。羅莎把較淺的卵石沖洗到發亮，伊蒙用袖口刷去較深石頭的土。她把亮石放在左緣，他把暗石置於右側，兩道倒影在他們手下閃動。
