English 원문
June pressed her palm to the branch; its bark stayed cool, though the nearby trowel felt warm. Fern knelt beside the stone in the flower bed, touching the darker patch that always tipped forward. They needed to roll the stone into a ready hole nearby. The branch, as tall as June, might work as a lever if they balanced it on a flat rock. June carried one slab from the path edge; the grain looked quilted, like stitched layers of grey cloth. She slid the slab under the branch and pushed down. The branch bent; the rock flipped aside, and only a thin ribbon of mud began to seep around the stone's base—partial movement, yet the gap remained. Vance, now easing the planting hole wider with a garden fork, had explained that the branch had been trimmed from a stall frame in an open-air market the previous winter.
While they fetched a second, wider slab, sunlight crept across the bed. The sudden transition from cool shade to bright glare warmed the upper half of the stone, and beads of dew turned to faint steam. Moisture condensed on the branch below, making its underside slick. Fern placed the new slab farther from the stone, adding a wooden off-cut as spacer; together, these additions raised the lever by another finger-length. They pressed again. The warmer, drier soil lost grip, and the stone lifted higher, but the wet bark slid forward, dropping it with a dull grind. June reacted first, jamming an emptied bucket beneath the lever to stop it falling back. Its content was a swirl of cool air, yet the rim caught the branch; the combined height—first slab, spacer, and bucket—finally cleared the buried root, and the stone rolled into the hole with a sigh of soil.
Loose earth slumped after the stone, filling the gap until only a curved rim stayed visible above the dark soil, and a thin wisp of steam drifted upward where sun touched the damp surface. From the hedge, the robin swooped low, caught a shining beetle exposed by the shaken mulch, and vanished over the roofline with its wings beating steady blue-grey arcs.
