The bright cone cut across the room, leaving carpet ahead glowing while deep shadow pooled behind his heels. A cat lounged on that warm patch, whiskers outlined by glare, ears flicking whenever a glass sphere chimed below. Gareth's goal stayed simple: guide one marble from the curved starting ramp all the way to the landing bowl without a pause. He had chosen wooden blocks like an apprentice, stacking them under the straight tube where yesterday's tape had loosened. Still, each roll faded midway, losing speed along the sagging section and stopping centimetres before the next drop. He lifted the tube, waited for shadow to slide off the joint, then released the marble, hoping extra height would help.

The sphere flashed beneath the lamp, hummed along the straight tube, yet darkness swallowed it before the tilted connector once more. Gareth traced the dim tape line, noticing vibration had pressed the carpet lower than he first guessed. If the tape slipped again, the marble would stop, leaving the landing bowl quiet and unused. Across the room, Zelda, quiet curator of spare parts, cut another tube; reflected glare edged her scissors. A folded transcript lay beside the blocks, its pale pages shining a narrow bar onto the carpet. Gareth waited, counting three slow cat breaths before releasing another marble, hoping the tube stayed clear of fresh sagging. The later launch matched the tube’s slight rebound; the sphere kept a faint gleam through the problem stretch yet stopped centimetres beyond. Progress existed, though incomplete, like a luxurious ribbon rolled halfway across the already shadowed carpet.

Before Gareth tried again, the cat rose, tail a sharp silhouette against lamp glare, and padded toward the launch shelf. One curious paw slipped under his wrist just as he tipped the marble forward, brushing glass and skin together. The sphere rolled too soon, caught a flash from the lamp, and met the sagging joint while the tube bounced upward. Momentum carried it beyond the usual dead zone, through the curved connector, and fresh clatter rose from the landing bowl. A quick breath of laughter escaped him as the cat licked its paw in the pooled darkness. The launch shelf, which had held a neat row of spheres, now showed one empty groove beside a faint paw mark.
