If the repair stayed aligned, the bead would glide the way to the bowl. They launched the marble; every turn answered with rattles, and the bowl waited with its ring. Yet a drip from the rinsed bead soaked the last cardboard ramp; the surface sagged, steering the glass under the sofa. A tabby sniffed, batted twice, and trotted off, the faint chime of the marble ringing inside its collar bell.
