Heat from the lamp seeped into the fresh tape; the adhesive softened and the joint sagged, undoing their gains. The sag made a new tilt, and the marble rolled backward toward the launch shelf. Nell reacted first and dragged the warm lamp a handspan away, cooling the spot. Alden tore the last two strips of tape and wrapped them together around the slipping joint.
