English 원문
The paperback cover felt slick beneath Pearl’s palm, yet a faint grit prickled across its glossy surface like sand. She slid the cover under a cardboard tube, and glare from the table lamp bounced along the ramp in a stripe. Beside her, Vera tipped a handful of spare marbles into the launch shelf bowl, each bead flashing under the glow. Their first test run began, yet the marble slowed at a shallow turn where two tubes met, jostle sounds fading into silence. Pearl gave the joint a gentle tug, aligning the tape, and the next descent reached the book-and-block platform with livelier rattle. An adult at the supply pile cut new tubes; the steel edges caught back-lit glare like thin lightning. From that high vantage point on the couch, the adult watched quietly, leaving the girls to their slow calibration.
Just as Vera released another marble, a deep clang rang from the radiator, and a draft flickered the lamp’s cone of light. Both girls craned their necks toward the hallway, hearing the adult move toward the noise. The clang grew louder; they stepped aside, leaving the marble mid-tube, its glass sphere haloed by dim reflected-gleam. In the kitchen the radiator cover rattled while the adult lifted it, so Pearl held a flashlight steady until the noise subsided. Back in the living room, warmer carpet heat had softened the cardboard landing strip into a slight dip. The waiting marble rolled on its own, drifted into the sag, and stopped beside the final turn, trapped in pooled darkness.
Vera dropped to her elbows; from that ground-level vantage point she saw how the sag redirected glare toward the carpet’s darker edge. She slid two fingers under the tube and, without lifting fully, nudged the softened spot, letting the cardboard bow straighter. Pearl moved alongside, offered a steady palm so the tube would not twist, and the glass sphere began to jostle forward again. At the dip’s exit the marble gained speed, crossed the bright patch, and clattered into the landing bowl with a muted ring. Pearl exhaled and brushed the paperback support; the cover that had felt gritty now showed a crescent worn smooth by sliding. A final shaft of light struck that mark, then slipped as the lamp shade trembled under a faint hallway vibration.
