A muted creak drifted through the cool garden as Rafe pressed the long branch onto a wooden plank beside the round stone. Dew clung to the grey bark. A nearby adult quietly watered iris leaves, the hose drawing a silver ribbon across the soil. The plank had been positioned beneath the branch to serve as a fulcrum. Rafe’s goal was simple: roll the stone aside so a sapling could root in the darker pit behind it. Viola crouched by the path edge, fingers tracing flat rocks slick with translucent moisture. When Rafe leaned, the timber had already flexed once, and a sharp tremble ran along its grain. With a dry snap the wood cracked, a clean slice running lengthwise; the branch sprang back, making the stone quiver but not shift. Viola touched her temple where a loose curl brushed, then let her breath out in a slow ribbon.

They fetched a flatter stone from the path edge. Its smooth surface slid on the damp earth. When they pressed, the lever shifted sideways, spilling dark soil into the blue-black mulch. The branch bowed instead of lifting, as if any force vanished inside its bend. Nearby metal ticked softly against the pale fence. Rafe paused, noticing how the broken plank’s thin slice had curled upward like a shallow wedge. He eased the splintered slice beneath the branch, tight against the stone, using the crack itself as a stop. The same weakness that had blocked them now gripped the rock with surprising strength. If the plank had stayed whole, the wedge would never have existed. On their next press the branch stiffened, the stone lifted a finger’s width, then rolled onto firmer soil. A pale, four-leaf clover, freed from shadow, caught a shard of light and gleamed beside Viola’s boot.
