The card reader flashed a dim red figure: two credits, while the route required six. She pulled a small roll of coins from her pocket, each still warm from her palm. She then tipped the first coin carefully into the waiting steel slot at its base. The coin struck the tray with a clear ring, but the balance climbed only to four. Beside the machine she set down a biodegradable soup cup whose rising steam curled toward the chilled glass screen. A faint film formed, blurring the digits, and beads gathered like tiny mirrors under the sharp light.

The second coin followed, nudging the total to five, yet the mist thickened where warm vapour met colder air again. Moisture crept further lower until the scanner silhouette slowly faded behind the uneven shimmering glaze. A volunteer environmentalist wheeled a fold-out table past her; heaps of pamphlets were being furnished for an upcoming cleanup. At the very top lay a flat, biodegradable litter box intended for the station’s adopted cat, rattling gently in the glare. His steady passing disturbed the air, sending a cooler ripple across the glass and widening the fog rather than clearing it. Hope shifted the soup cup aside, pressed her card again, and watched the reader blink in useless refusal. If the bus arrived exactly on schedule, she would have barely one minute to cross the footbridge. She thumbed her final coin, breathed once, and dropped it through the slot at the waiting machine throat. The balance jumped to six, and a ventilation burst from the outer doors swept across the screen. Gate panels parted, while her empty cup rocked once on the metal ledge under the reflected glare.
