Dried algae and sun-warmed rope brushed Viola's nose as her boots thudded onto the first plank. Rafael crouched at the shore equipment area, sorting hooks, while she walked to the mid-dock shade zone beneath the willow. The boards groaned under each step, and through the gaps she could hear water slurp around a pale root and swirl over mud that shifted like quicksand. She had prepared a bright float with a hollow body; inside, trapped air kept it buoyant. The lure beneath had been carved to resemble a tiny nautilus and tapped the wooden edge with a hollow ping. One smooth cast sent the rig outward; the float landed with a soft plop, then a faint hiss leaked from its seam as warm sunlight met the plastic, and nearby fish darted away with a brief flick.
Viola reeled in slowly; the spool rasped, yet the float still sighed. She pressed the bobber against a shady plank, hoping cooler air would quiet it. Clouds, billowing ahead of an overcast patch, muffled the glare for a moment, but heat stored in the plastic kept whispering through the seam. She cast again; a soft splash echoed under the willow. Rising warm air from the planks drifted toward the mooring-post side, nudging the float. Each tiny hiss matched a gentle drift, until the line brushed the rope. A low scrape followed, then the hook lodged among the fronds waving around the post. Pulling harder only added a deeper rasp as braid met rough wood; the float tilted, sighing on every tug yet refusing to come free.
Rafael heard the trouble and crossed the dock; the boards answered his steps with hollow knocks. He picked up a small mallet kept for tapping loose stakes and dunked it in the lake bucket, darkening the head. A single cooled tap on the float sent droplets across the surface; the sudden chill numbed the warm plastic, and the seam closed with a tiny gulp of silence. Without the hiss, the float lost its push; it hung motionless while Rafael lifted the rope enough for Viola to slide the rod tip beneath. The braid slackened with a gentle sigh, freeing hook and lure. Water lapped in slow pulses against the posts, and the muted thrum beneath the dock carried on toward the deeper end.
