The pad, however, juddered; a tiny pebble hidden in the felt threw broken flashes across the surface and pushed the leather away. She paused, pried the grain loose with a wooden pick, and pressed again. The pad had been roughened by last morning’s repairs, making the pebble easy to catch. Polished wax spread smoothly now, catching each reflection like a small jewel. The companion task waited beside her: a marigold suede sneaker belonging to an illustrator, its bright side panel decorated with a dangling plastic jewel that swung gently in the glare.

Fine black powder lifted from the wheel and drifted beyond the bulb’s bright border, landing as gray freckles on the suede sneaker. Shadow edged every speck, turning the cheerful colour dull. Sable drew a quick breath. At the same moment, the doorway curtain parted. A stray balloon animal, twisted into a floppy dog, drifted inward on a thread of outside air. The string snagged the lamp arm, swinging the light and scattering the powder even farther. Rafe stepped from the repair bench, caught the balloon, and held the lamp steady while his shoulders shook with silent laughter. Together they wrapped the sneaker in a soft cloth. The covering stole buffing space, forcing Sable to lower the wheel speed. The dress shoe gained only a muted shine. Faint freckles remained on the suede, but both pairs now sat secure in their cubby slots.

By evening, the shop lay quiet under a dim security bulb, its glare forming a narrow pool across the counter. The black shoe reflected a soft halo rather than a mirror finish. The marigold sneaker, still wrapped, showed one gray fleck near the jewel charm where the cloth had slipped. Dust gathered on the silent buffing wheel. The balloon animal, now limp, hovered against the doorway frame, the thin plastic barely moving in the stale air.
