English 원문
"Slide toward the leaf," Rosa called.
Heath's boots rasped over the cloudy ice as he edged forward, the gritty scrape ringing like sandpaper against glass. The terrier beside him gave a sharp yip, its claws ticking against the stone border. The leaf had been pressed into the surface overnight, and tiny air pockets hissed whenever weight shifted above it. Heath aimed to reach the far bank in one smooth pass before the thinning edges turned to slush. Rosa remained on the center line, waiting her turn, so his first push met her sliding heel. Boots collided with a dull bump, and both bodies drifted sideways while an echoing creak flared beneath them. A ranger arranging orange cones nearby paused as the sound carried, but he soon continued, leaving them alone.
Heath bent, trying to scoop the leaf out with two fingers, yet the brittle surface refused to split. An oval shimmer appeared under the leaf, and a trapped bubble shifted each time his glove tapped the ice. If he had kept prying with force, the slick centre would have hurled him against the far rim instead. Heath proposed a simple game by tapping the ice twice, then flicked the leaf sideways so it glided like a paper boat. Rosa laughed, steering clear while the terrier chased the speck, its collar bells chiming in bursts. Meltwater pooling near a crack sped the leaf farther than expected, forcing Heath to shift toward edge ice. His boot punched through the soft film with a splash, soaking wool, and the terrier skidded to a halt. Warm breath rose in clouds while the ranger announced that the forecast allowed an hour before full thaw.
Instead of chasing distance, Heath guided the leaf along the diagonal ridge, aiming to make it circle the bubble. With each nudge, a whirr rose where ice grains rubbed under his sole, and the bubble slid beneath. Rosa joined, timing her pushes between the terrier’s hops so nobody crowded the centre. Soon a path etched itself across the cloudy surface, white like chalk, threading around spider-web cracks. Heath paused at the warm patch, boots dripping, then stepped back and traced one last curve past the leaf. His heel carved a fresh crescent near the terrier’s prints, a groove shining against the dull morning ice.
