English 원문
Steam wisps had blurred the window-glass before Sable reached the jar station beside the stove. Grandmother angled the heavy copper kettle, ruby bubbles rising, while Sable’s single aim stayed clear—fill the final empty jar. A small plate for set testing waited nearby, frost-white from the freezer, yet something blocked the space before it. A grey lump of clay, cold and pliable, had been left earlier during a science experiment and now clung to the counter. Sable tried to peel it away, but the sticky surface sucked against the laminate and refused every gentle tug. Her palm pressed harder, yet the lump only spread wider, trapping sugar grains and slowing her entire maneuver toward the waiting jars. Grandmother tipped the gas dial lower, foam shrinking, and raised an eyebrow in quiet debate about timing.
The thermometer bobbed inside the kettle, silver face showing one hundred four degrees, while the earlier plate test had pointed higher. That contradiction posed a fresh question, and Sable’s shoulders squared as she reached for the wide-mouth funnel. The funnel rim met the jar’s chipped mouth, slid sideways, and sent a ruby thread dripping toward the floor mat. Sable wiped the spill, then glanced at the stubborn clay still hugging the counter like cold putty. Its yielding softness, once the obstacle, now sat exactly where a brace for the funnel might fit. She pinched a strip from the edge, rolled it into a neat ring, and pressed the ring around the jar mouth. The clay hugged the glass, widened the rim, and turned itself into a firm lever that held the funnel perfectly upright. Grandmother nodded once and guided the kettle’s spout over, letting the thick mixture pour without another slip.
Within a minute, the final jar filled to the thread line, and Sable covered it with a lid warmed inside the basin. She eased the jar onto the rack, wiped the counter, and left the clay ring to cool into a pale collar. A stray bubble popped in the kettle; the thermometer face showed a calmer number, matching the plate at last. At the doorway, the house cat paused, sniffed the sweet air, then trotted away as the steam drifted toward the hall.
