Plip, plip—the hose nozzle tapped a dented pan, each drop ringing against the metal before slipping into the puddle below. Amber afternoon light slid across the mud-kitchen plank, turning damp wood into streaks that glisten like fresh honey.

Inez eyed the bucket of thick paste under the work surface. A rubbery crust lay over the dark clay, too firm for her spoon. She needed enough clear water to loosen it—exactly to the shallow groove inside her tin mug. The hose ran only as a slow trickle, so she began to gather. First, the dented pan stayed beneath the drip until two finger-widths of water pooled. She tipped that into the mug: not yet halfway. Next, she wedged a second, smaller lid on the ground, its rim catching the drops more neatly; when poured, the level rose but still missed the groove. Behind the hedge, a hidden creek murmured, reminding her how freely water can move when nothing blocks the path. The sieve, clogged by yesterday’s clay, had been leaning nearby. Inez shook it clean, slid it under the nozzle, and watched the mesh guide the drops faster. As the mug filled, a sudden splash came from the bucket— a tiny frog had climbed the inner wall and landed in the wet edge. Startled, Inez steadied the mug just as the surface lifted past the scratched groove in one smooth rise.

She carried the mug to the bucket station and poured. The crust cracked, sank, and clay beneath swirled loose enough to stir. Petals collected earlier began to nestle on the surface, spreading faint streaks of colour through the mix. Inez folded them in with slow circles until the batter slid from her spoon without lumps. At the drying shelf, the first dollop of the new mixture held its shape, steam curling above it in the warm air.

At the same moment, near the ingredient garden, York pressed pebbles into his own mound; one stone shifted, and a ring of golden mud rolled outward across the plank’s edge.
