English 원문
A single round seed perched on the lip of the basil tray; Darla bent nearer and murmured, “Which packet lost you?” Most envelopes on the seed-tray shelf carried blurred ink, so shape and smell were now her only guides. She lifted two paper packets, tipped them gently, and watched mixed kernels roll across warm honey-coloured wood. The magnifying glass beside an amber jar served as her first tool; beneath its lens, seed coats looked like tiny maps. Darla had already grouped the flattest seeds by smell, yet this stray round one refused to match any pile. Outside, Glen, a retired teacher, tied fresh twine around tomato stakes, whistling softly by the garden kiosk.
She pinched the mystery seed, walked to the herb-drying hook, and rubbed it near a brittle basil stem, hunting for peppery oil. A soft nudge against her calf came first; the resident tabby slid across the shelf to claim the warm sun patch. His swishing tail swept two open packets; seeds sprinkled the floor like soft caramel sand. The jolt helped awaken a wren on the window ledge; it flapped upward, bumping a lavender bundle dangling from the hook. Loose lavender heads rained onto the tabby’s back, and the cat leapt toward the kiosk roof outside, ending the shower. Darla had been watching the chaos, yet the falling flowers offered an answer: their pale husks matched the round intruder exactly.
She scooped every lavender seed into a spare tray, then coaxed the cat back inside before more birds could join the chain. If the cat waited any longer, more seeds might tumble from the drying hook. She gathered scattered basil grains with a broad brush of dried grass; no packet stayed perfectly pure, yet each mix looked manageable. Warm beams continued to transform the smell of spilled herbs into something sweeter, masking the faint musk left by the tabby. She prepared blank labels, unaware of a single lavender husk rolling slowly along a groove beneath the shelf.
