"The giraffe almost touches the top."
Greer lifted the chopstick handle until the long cardboard neck brushed a blade of glare along the sheet. Afternoon sunlight poured through the upper pane, and the openness above the pinned fabric made the shadow razor-sharp. At the prop table, Ian had been trimming new tails for a foam fish, each small snip marking steady refinement. A tabby cat dozed on the warm sill, its ears flicking at every flutter behind the screen. When the giraffe’s legs slid across the fabric, the moving darkness startled the cat; it sprang forward, paw thudding against the sheet. The sudden weight popped a pin, and the cloth sagged inward, throwing a deep fold across the center. Tiny pinholes near the corner sprayed dots of starlight around the crease, yet the persistence of the bright glare left no hiding place for the jagged line. Greer grasped the edge and tugged, but the loosened pin lay beyond reach and the fabric refused to straighten.
Before she could search for help, a passing cloud cooled the glass and dulled the glare; the blurred silhouette lost balance against the drifting light. If the cat had stayed on the floor, the pin would still have held. The cloud slipped away, the window brightened again, and the fold remained—a dark ridge splitting the glowing field. Greer’s fingertips traced the crease; beneath them, the line felt firm, almost like a drawn horizon. Instead of fighting it, she lowered the puppet until the giraffe’s hooves met the ridge, turning the former flaw into solid ground. Ian crossed from the prop table and pressed a spare pin into the upper corner, anchoring the sheet while leaving the central ridge untouched. Above that ridge the giraffe stood tall; below it, scattered specks of starlight shimmered like distant waves. They kept the fold as a horizon, letting the accident shape the play. Greer guided the tall giraffe along the bright upper strip while Ian sailed a cardboard canoe beneath the crease, both silhouettes drifting sideways across the glowing fabric.
