Honeyed pear juice soaked the grass, its thick scent clinging to Theo’s boots as he stopped beside the low ladder station. Only pale light filtered through blue-grey leaves, and a neat quintet of gold-green pears hung above him, almost humming with weight. He balanced a wicker basket on a patch of flattened grass and slid a folded canvas liner across the bottom. The ensemble of nearby branches brushed his shoulders each time the breeze nodded them, and the ladder feet sank slightly into the damp earth. An orchard worker called from a distant row, but Theo already had fingers curled around the first stem. The pear dropped with a gentle thud onto the canvas cushion, and he reached for the next, eager to fill the basket before other pickers arrived.

He soon pressed a broad ring of cool leaves against the inner rim, hoping they would guard the growing collection. Not satisfied, he gathered wisps of soft grass and tucked them between the fruit. The basket grew heavy; the leaf ring had been pressed tight against the rim, and wood creaked under the combined load. In the tight space, two pears rubbed together like a quiet quarrel, and a midnight-dark bruise spread across one curved side. Then a robin burst from the hedgerow, wings rattling. Startled, Theo jerked his arm, and the ladder tilted; three pears rolled upward toward the rim. He caught them, yet the crowded layers squashed their stems. Above, the branch sprang back, scattering pale petals that drifted over the ensemble of tools at the ladder base.

A short wooden sorting paddle lay among those tools, and Theo seized it. He slid its flat edge beneath the ring of leaves, lifted, and removed the entire middle layer in one deliberate motion. The subtraction cleared space; the pears settled deeper without crushing one another, and the bruise stopped spreading. He shifted the rescued fruit into a side pocket of the basket, then moved everything onto firmer soil he had stumbled upon beside a root. With the load now balanced, he carried it toward the gate. Later, he paused at the ladder station to gather the stray petals. The patch of grass that had been sticky with pear juice now showed only a faint dark circle beneath the cool blue shade.
