“Pass that pear here.”

Suki leaned across the back crate, her fingers brushing the fuzzy surface of a warm peach. She had already compared three peaches from the front display, yet each one carried thumb bruises hidden beneath the glossy mist. The deeper shade behind the awning held firmer fruit, yet a fine spray left a thin layer that reduced friction. When she lifted the first peach, it squirmed from her thumb, dropped, and rolled down the tilted plank toward the plums. The peach bumped a plum, which nudged another, and the tiny chain rattled like slow dominoes across the wooden network. Finally, the last plum tapped a strawberry box; the plastic container slid forward, gathering speed in the peach’s wet slipstream. Suki's knees bent; she lunged and braced the box with her forearm before it tipped past the plank’s edge.

The box secure, she exhaled and wiped palm against her shorts, deciding the peaches needed quick analysis before another slide began. She chose a second peach, and pressed it gently against the rough crate corner to dry the skin. Drying it improved her grip, yet a leftover bead slid down her wrist, and the fruit wobbled once in her palm. If another gust arrived, the berry stack would wander again, so she shifted her stance to block the narrow breeze channel. Reese waited beside the stall path, wrangling the paper bag open with both hands while balancing earlier plums against his ribs. She placed the peach inside, its weight tilting the brass pan that had been hung from a creaking chain above the counter. The pan swung slowly, then steadied, yet faint motion kept the chain clicking like a hollow clock over the warm stalls. A ribbon of ripe sweetness hovered near her nose, drifting through the gap before mingling with cooler air from the shaded crates.

Suki 越過後方木箱，指尖擦過一顆帶絨毛的溫暖桃子。她已經在前排比較過三顆桃子，但每一顆都因顧客按壓而在光亮的水霧下藏著瘀痕。遮陽篷深處的陰涼區保存著較結實的果實，不過細水噴霧在表面留下薄薄一層水膜，減少了與手指的摩擦。第一次拿起桃子時，它從她拇指間溜走，掉落後沿斜木板滾向李子。桃子撞到一顆李子，又推動另一顆，小小連鎖反應像慢慢倒下的多米諾，在木箱間傳開。最後一顆李子碰到草莓盒，塑膠容器在桃子濕滑的尾流中加速向前滑行。Suki 膝蓋微曲，衝上前用前臂穩住盒子，阻止它越過木板邊緣。

盒子終於穩住，她吐了口氣，把手掌在短褲上抹乾，決定迅速檢查桃子免得再次滑動。她挑起第二顆桃子，輕輕在粗糙箱角擦乾果皮。這樣一來抓握力道增加，但殘餘水珠仍沿著手腕往下滑，桃子在她掌心又晃動了一下。如果又吹來一陣風，草莓堆就會再度移位，所以她移步擋住狹窄的風道。Reese 在通道旁等候，用雙手撐開紙袋，同時把先前買的李子夾在肋間。她把桃子放入，重量使吊鏈上的黃銅秤盤傾斜。秤盤慢慢擺動後稍微穩住，但微弱的晃動仍讓鏈條發出空洞的嗒聲，迴盪在暖洋洋的攤位上空。一縷成熟桃香在她鼻尖盤旋，穿過縫隙後與陰涼木箱透出的涼氣交會。
