English 원문
A dented metal scoop, a wooden board, and a glass jar leaned against the front step. Finn kneeled at the shaping area, palms inside damp gloves, rolling the first sphere of snow. Each squeeze gave a sharp squeal, then a hushed crunch, like dry gravel shifting. A brittle wildflower stem protruded from the drift and tapped the board whenever the scoop rang against stone. The scoop served as his only implement, and a black cat balanced on the cedar fence, tail twitching at every noise. Finn placed the first row of balls in a circle, the ring becoming the foundation of the dome. He had already formed three rows when a shallow cavity had been carved inside, yet the jar still scraped the edge and refused to sit straight. The narrow space threatened the plan, and the multitude of tiny squeaks from the thinning wall warned him of coming trouble.
Trying to widen the hollow, Finn pressed knuckles against the inner snow, twisting slowly so the outer layer would stay round. The pressure worked; the cavity grew wider, and a note of vexation rattled through the fragile arch when a sudden brittle crack answered his next push, and the dome sagged toward the board—fixing the jar space had robbed thickness from the wall. Snow hissed as trapped air escaped, and the circle tilted. The cat leaped off the fence, landing with a soft thud that sent a rattle through the fragile arch. Finn shifted approach: he supported the weak side with an extra ball, but that ball was wetter than the rest. It froze fast, forming a rigid bump that blocked the curve. He paused, listening to the wind brush powder across the top, then angled the board under the low edge, letting the dome stand slightly crooked yet steady.
Evening arrived on a muffled sweep of wings as a jay skimmed above the yard. Finn lifted the dome with both hands; wet gloves squealed against the icy surface while loose crystals dripped like distant beads. He carried it to the front step where the adult placed the candle inside. The wick flared, and the snow shell began to whisper as melting spread in slow circles. The glass jar that had leaned empty beside the step now glowed from within, its sides streaked by pale water lines and tiny sparkling grains.
